The most recent lesson plans for Terms 1, 2, 3, and 4 are included in the CAPS Document for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. According to South African Department of Education standards, this is the most crucial information for both teachers and learners, as it directs the development of the Technical Sciences subject curriculum for the FET Phase.

Supporting students in the three technological concentration areas of mechanical, electrical, and civil technology is the primary goal of technical sciences. In Technical Science, learners will be competent at NQF level 4.

Technical high school students will be better equipped to incorporate scientific information into their technology-related coursework. Learners with a technical orientation in their education will find it easier to understand scientific concepts and skills. Technical sciences, as an enabling topic to support technology study in schools, will meet the needs of the industry and the technology subjects.

Classifying, communicating, measuring, planning an investigation, formulating models, identifying and controlling variables, hypothesizing, observing and comparing, interpreting, predicting, problem-solving, and reflecting are some of the skills that students will learn. Observing simulations and using practical application will be the key competencies.

The study of technical sciences will equip students for work, citizenship, further education, and socioeconomic and holistic growth. Students in Grades 10 through 12 who elect to study technical sciences will have better access to applied technology courses, professional career pathways, and entrepreneurial opportunities. Additionally, technical sciences will foster the advancement of technological skills, thereby advancing economic growth and the social well-being of a greater number of our nation’s residents.

The six main knowledge areas that Technical Sciences comprises of are:

  • Mechanics
  • Matter and Materials
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Waves, Sound and Light
  • Heat and Thermodynamics
  • Chemical Change
